May 3 – ‘The Bible: The Complete Word (abridged)’

Allens Lane Theater presents “The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged)” by Adam Long, Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor, with additional material by Matthew Croke. Whether you are Catholic or atheist, Muslim or Jew, Protestant or vegetarian, you will be tickled by this fun romp through old time religion. Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m. Location: Allens Lane Art Center, 601 West Allens Lane.

May 14 – Valley Talks Series

Friends of the Wissahickon will present its Valley Talks series on current sustainable environmental-related topics May 14 and June 11 at 6 p.m. at the Valley Green Inn.

The May 14 talk will be “Pests, Pollinators and You in a Changing Climate” by Mark Boudreau of Penn State Brandywine.

Insects, like humans, are experiencing the effects of climate change. While overall populations are dramatically declining, some less desirable species are adapting and moving into new areas. In this talk, Boudreau will consider how local threats like the spotted lanternfly, hemlock woolly adelgid and emerald ash borer, as well as beneficial species of pollinators and predators, will react as the climate changes.

The talk is free for current Friends of the Wissahickon members and $10 for non-members.

The June 11 talk will be a Rain Check Workshop from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. This workshop is free for all attendees and intended for Philadelphia residents only.

The Philadelphia Water Department’s Rain Check program gives Philadelphians an opportunity to reduce pollution that would otherwise end up in our creeks and rivers. Rain Check is managed by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, which will host the workshop, where participants will learn how to get a free rain barrel from PWD and discounts on downspout planters, permeable pavers and other stormwater management tools.

A complimentary wine and cheese reception is offered.

May 5 – Mt. Zion Baptist Fundraising Concert

The J.Q. Jackson Memorial Scholarship Ministry of Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Germantown will sponsor a fundraising concert May 5 at 2 p.m. at Center in the Park, 5818 Germantown Ave. The featured artist will be the Jordan Williams Jazz Quartet. A $30 donation also will include light refreshments. All proceeds will benefit the Mt. Zion scholarship fund. For more information, contact the church office at (215) 844-7614.

May 5 – Artmaking and Storytelling

Introduce your preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) to the enjoyment of art through stories and artmaking. Young visitors and their grown-ups enjoy reading picture books in the galleries, followed by an art project. Come back each month to hear a new tale and make something special to take home. Accompanying adult required. Free every first Sunday, May 5, and June 2, from 11 a.m. to noon at 9201 Germantown Ave.
