Attacker mows down family with vehicle, kills 2 with shotgun

A man drove his vehicle into a family as they walked near Glacier National Park then began shooting at them with a shotgun, killing one man and mortally wounding a toddler. Authorities said Tuesday that after the assailant ran out of ammunition, he took out a knife and continued the attack before one of the victims managed to kill him. Killed in the Sunday night violence in the tourist town of East Glacier in northwestern Montana were David Siau, 39, of Syracuse, New York, and Siau’s 18-month-old daughter, McKenzie. The Glacier County Sheriff's Office says the assailant had been in a prior relationship with the woman who killed him and that he had mental health issues.

Gun-control measure will be on Oregon's fall ballot

Oregonians will decide in November whether people wanting to purchase a gun will first have to qualify for a permit, after one of the strictest gun-control measures in the nation landed on the ballot. Oregon's elections division has determined that the gun-safety campaign had delivered enough verified signatures of registered voters to put Initiative 17 on the ballot for the fall election. The measure would require a permit to purchase any gun. To qualify for a permit, an applicant would need to complete an approved firearm safety course, pay a fee, provide personal information, submit to fingerprinting and photographing and pass a criminal background check.

Police laud actions of man who killed Indiana mall attacker

Authorities say a 20-year-old man likely assembled a rifle in the bathroom of a suburban Indianapolis shopping mall before shooting five people in the food court, killing three of them before an armed shopper fatally shot him. Greenwood Police Chief James Ison said at a news conference Monday that Jonathan Sapirman of Greenwood apparently was facing eviction before he opened fire at the Greenwood Park Mall shortly before it closed Sunday evening. He says Sapirman continued shooting people until 22-year-old Elisjsha Dicken, of Seymour, shot and killed him. Authorities say Dicken was shopping at the mall with his girlfriend and that he acted heroically. Ison says investigators are still trying to determine a motive.

Gun violence leads community groups to take bolder action

Seattle doesn't often make national news for gun violence, but in 2021, more shots were fired there than in any of the previous five years. Last summer, a local group that intervenes to try to prevent gun violence took the unusual step of paying 16 young men who were likely to be involved in shootings to leave the city for 30 days. The founder of Community Passageways, Dominique Davis, said all but three of those young people have not faced additional charges since. Community violence intervention is not new but interest in the approach is growing. The Biden administration is backing it and urging states and cities to invest in groups doing this work.
