A man drove his vehicle into a family as they walked near Glacier National Park then began shooting at them with a shotgun, killing one man and mortally wounding a toddler. Authorities said Tuesday that after the assailant ran out of ammunition, he took out a knife and continued the attack before one of the victims managed to kill him. Killed in the Sunday night violence in the tourist town of East Glacier in northwestern Montana were David Siau, 39, of Syracuse, New York, and Siau’s 18-month-old daughter, McKenzie. The Glacier County Sheriff's Office says the assailant had been in a prior relationship with the woman who killed him and that he had mental health issues.

The trial of a Virginia man with alleged neo-Nazi sympathies accused of murdering his girlfriend’s parents has been delayed after incriminating statements he made were tossed out by a judge. Prosecutors are appealing a ruling issued earlier this month by a judge presiding over the murder trial of Nicholas Giampa. He was just 17 when he was arrested in 2017 and charged with the murder of 48-year-old Scott Fricker and 43-year-old Buckley Kuhn-Fricker in their Herndon, Virginia, home. The case attracted national attention because of evidence Giampa espoused Nazi philosophies. The judge says police did not properly advise Giampa of his right to remain silent.

Jurors in the penalty trial of Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz are being shown graphic video of him murdering 17 people inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Many held their hands to their faces as they saw the 15-minute recording. Some squirmed. One juror looked up at Cruz with his eyes wide. The video was shown despite defense objections that it could inflame the jury against Cruz. The judge said it accurately reflects what happened, and doesn't unfairly prejudice his case. Cruz has pleaded guilty to 17 counts of murder, and 17 more of attempted murder. The jury must decide on death or life in prison.

The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that had provided a constitutional right to abortion. The June 24 ruling is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states. In anticipation of the decision, several states led by Democrats took steps to protect abortion access. The decision also sets up the potential for legal fights between the states over whether providers and those who help women obtain abortions can be sued or prosecuted.

California parole officials have approved releasing a notorious former Mexican Mafia prison gang leader who has been cooperating with law enforcement for nearly 20 years. Two consecutive governors previously blocked parole for Rene Enriquez. They argued in part that he is safer in prison than on the streets where he may be targeted by his old cronies. But his lawyer said Tuesday that officials can't block his parole just because he might be in danger. Authorities have taken extraordinary steps to protect him over the years. Enriquez plans to keep cooperating with federal authorities as they are again prosecuting the leadership of the prison-based gang.

The shooting of a young Black man whose family says he was experiencing a mental health crisis has revived some activists’ mistrust of Minneapolis’ troubled police department and their perception that officers go to greater lengths to capture white suspects alive. Authorities still haven’t said what led two police snipers to open fire on 20-year-old Andrew Tekle Sundberg early Thursday after a six-hour standoff. And they haven't released police videos of the confrontation. That has left activists skeptical that the officers were justified in shooting Sundberg. And it's once again exposed the distrust that many in the Black community feel toward police.
