Nearly two months after a deadly shooting a Texas elementary school, a Texas House of Representatives committee report found that nearly 400 officers from local, state and federal agencies responded to the 77-minute rampage in which 19 kids and two teachers died. According to the report, frequent lockdowns contributed to a "diminished sense of vigilance about responding to security alerts.” Nearly 50 security alerts and lockdowns were called in Uvalde since February, many of which are attributed to “bailouts”--- a local term for people fleeing from law enforcement after crossing into the U.S., according to the report.

Oregonians will decide in November whether people wanting to purchase a gun will first have to qualify for a permit, after one of the strictest gun-control measures in the nation landed on the ballot. Oregon's elections division has determined that the gun-safety campaign had delivered enough verified signatures of registered voters to put Initiative 17 on the ballot for the fall election. The measure would require a permit to purchase any gun. To qualify for a permit, an applicant would need to complete an approved firearm safety course, pay a fee, provide personal information, submit to fingerprinting and photographing and pass a criminal background check.

Authorities say a 20-year-old man likely assembled a rifle in the bathroom of a suburban Indianapolis shopping mall before shooting five people in the food court, killing three of them before an armed shopper fatally shot him. Greenwood Police Chief James Ison said at a news conference Monday that Jonathan Sapirman of Greenwood apparently was facing eviction before he opened fire at the Greenwood Park Mall shortly before it closed Sunday evening. He says Sapirman continued shooting people until 22-year-old Elisjsha Dicken, of Seymour, shot and killed him. Authorities say Dicken was shopping at the mall with his girlfriend and that he acted heroically. Ison says investigators are still trying to determine a motive.

Jurors in the penalty trial of Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz are being shown graphic video of him murdering 17 people inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Many held their hands to their faces as they saw the 15-minute recording. Some squirmed. One juror looked up at Cruz with his eyes wide. The video was shown despite defense objections that it could inflame the jury against Cruz. The judge said it accurately reflects what happened, and doesn't unfairly prejudice his case. Cruz has pleaded guilty to 17 counts of murder, and 17 more of attempted murder. The jury must decide on death or life in prison.
