Congratulations to the 2019 Kappa Achievement Awardees! Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Philadelphia Alumni Chapter Polemarch L. Douglas Harrell explained, “This event is one that truly embodies the tradition of our chapter’s continued recognition of Kappa men, both alumni and undergraduate, along with a legacy family who have demonstrated what our fraternity’s motto of achieving in every field of human endeavor is all about.”

An individual who is not a member of the fraternity but is exceptionally committed to the community is also honored and students receive scholarships. Harrell also thanked Kenneth Brown, banquet chairman, co-chair Ernie Brown and committee members Devon Allen, Lionel Hoye and Erick Pullian for working so diligently.

The 64th Annual Achievement Awards Banquet was held this month at the Flourtown Country Club. The 2019 distinguished awardees were: Albert E. Wilkins, recipient of the “Achievement Award;” the Green family received the Polemarch Legacy Award; Troy Robinson received the Dr. Alvin N. Vaughn Service Award; Jeffrey Montague received the Joseph M. Grier Award; Councilwoman at-Large Blondell Reynolds Brown received the Humanitarian Awardee; and Jabir McKnight, Epsilon Chapter and Julien Hill, Gamma Omega Chapter were the Dr. John N. Williams Award recipients.

Albert E. Wilkins has served Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. with dedication for nearly 39 years. His dedication dates back to his days as an undergraduate at Cheyney University up till now and his extensive involvement with the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter.

Wilkins stated, “I am very appreciative of receiving the Achievement Award today but I know that it was a group task. Everything I have done has come from the hard work from a team of folks who have helped. To the high school scholars, congratulations on receiving the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. Philadelphia Alumni Chapter Scholarship for it is well desired. I wish you and your families all the very best in the future for your future is very bright so let the light shine upon you.”

Councilman at-Large Derek Green whose father, life member Walter Green Jr. is a 1969 initiate of the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter; mother, Anita Green; wife, Sheila Mitchell-Green; son, Justin Green and sister, Valerie Green Amos represented the award-winning family.

Councilman Green said, “As a family, we are extremely humbled to receive the Polemarch’s Legacy Award. Considering the rich history of the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., this award is an incredible honor.”

Honoree Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown remarked, “There are no words to adequately express my gratitude to have been honored by one of the fraternities of the Divine Nine, the men of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. Philadelphia Alumni Chapter. To be included in the company of my colleague and Kappa Alpha Psi member, Councilman Derek Green made the afternoon that much more special. Their recognition of my work in the Philadelphia City Council is an affirmation that I have done my part to make a small difference in the corner of the world I occupy.

“Moreover, my difficult decision to not seek re-election is a result of self-reflection and my belief that I do not want to get to the end of my career and ‘only have lived the length of it, I want to have lived the width of it’ as well. I am eternally grateful for the support from Polemarch Doug Harrell Jr. all of the men of Kappa Alpha Psi who helped me win five consecutive successful elections.”

In a statement discussing the merits of honoree Jeffery W. Montague: “His love for Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., and his personal friendships inspire him to ‘be the best’ one could be. He feels philanthropy that helps bring our minority youth exposure to “what could be” is his current driving force to help make a difference in our community.”
