The Philadelphia Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted its Second Annual Philly Deltas All White Day Party at the Reserve Lounge in center city on Sunday. Despite the gloomy downpour outside, the atmosphere was bright and sunny inside. There was a great turnout with 350 members and guests who were ready to party for a purpose.

Dr. Monica Johnson Taylor, president of the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, remarked, “Our Second Annual All White Day Party provides an opportunity for our guests to fellowship and have fun, while dressed in seasonal white attire. Funds raised from the event support community programming and public service outreach, such as the Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute and Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy programs, which focus on professional and leadership development for girls; EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence), a mentoring program for boys; the Juanita Kidd Stout Youth Empowerment Conference, which provides financial literacy to youth and their families; and the SAT Prep Workshop, which assists college-bound students with preparing for, and successfully taking, the college admissions examination.”

“Whether providing college scholarships to deserving students, encouraging healthy lifestyles through our physical and mental health initiatives, or inspiring people of all ages to develop a love of the arts, Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter has continued to be at the forefront for transforming lives and changing communities. As we begin the countdown to marking a century of service, we look forward to hosting this, and other exciting events, for years to come,” she said.

Other chapter officers include Jacqueline E. Greene, Dr. Penney Sparks Nixon, Donna Holmes Lockett, Kamia Hobson, Janet N. Gilmore, Lee Anne S. Douglas, Tiana R. Phillips, Blondell Warner, Jocelyn P. Geter and Dana McCutchen.

Among special guests “Out & About” having a great time at the party were: Sonja Waters, president of the Harrisburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta; Doug Harrell, polemarch of Philadelphia Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; and Robert Bruce Hill Jr., president of Rho Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Hill was on point in summarizing the event, saying, “It was a perfect way to end the summer and support our community. I had a great time catching up with friends and fraternity brothers, while jamming to hip-hop and R&B’s greatest hits. The DJ kept the crowd moving.”

The sorority is proud of its history and officially states, “Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Since its founding in 1913, more than 200,000 women have joined the organization. The organization is a sisterhood of predominantly Black, college-educated women. The sorority currently has 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Republic of Korea. The Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered in 1927 by 11 dynamic, focused and visionary young women!

Kudos to event co-chairs of the sorority’s “Dolls and Divas Committee,” Tiana Phillips and Dana McCutchen, who did a terrific job, and all chapter members.

Have a fantastic week “Out & About” everyone!
